以下幾個原則的情況之下，必須加定冠詞 the:
1. 當一個國家是由許多島嶼所組成，或是是由幾個州、群體所組成，因此我們必須說: the United States、the Middle East, the UK
2. 最高比較級時，必須加 the，例如：the best, the longest, the highest
3. 順序詞時，必須加 the，例如：the first, the second, the third
4. 世界上唯一僅有的，必須加 the, 例如： the sun, the internet, the envoriment
5. 指特別某一個事物， 例如： the government, the police, the river
