• MRT 捷運，但香港是說 MTR，為了避免困惑，我一概習慣說 subway

原因的英文不只有 because 還可以用 owing to, due to, caused by, the cause of

提到事情發生的原因，多數人只懂得用 because，其實有 since, as, owing to, due to, caused by, the cause of 可用來說明事情發生的理由或原因，今天我們來學怎麼使用這些字彙，提升口說、寫作的能力。以下這張圖，你想到如何描述「因為路上結冰造成車禍」了嗎?

Must, Need, Should, May 你用對了嗎? 別再一秒惹毛外國朋友 | 圖解情態助動詞 Modal Verbs | 英文文法

台灣人口語常犯的錯誤在於 must, need, should, may 這些情態助動詞 (modal verbs) 使用不恰當，會讓人覺得你很無禮 (rude) ，比如說，外國朋友跟你說他讀書/工作做不完，你建議他 You need to work hard all night. 保證一秒惹毛外國朋友。

首先，我們來了解情態助動詞 (modal Verbs) 是用來表達可能性、需要性、和必須性。多數人知道 “can 的過去式是 could”, “will 的過去式是 would”，”may 的過去式是 might”，但助動詞並沒有你想像中的簡單，它是具有情緒程度上不同的意思。當你給朋友建議時，”need” 是強烈命令性的語氣，而 “should” 和 “will” 是中性的建議語氣。而 would better 是很委婉的提議。回到開始的例子，更好的說法是 You’d better work hard all night.

然而，情態助動詞 (modal Verbs) 並不只用來給建議表達某件事的需要性，它也可用在某件事發生的機率。例如：You must be very tired. 這裡 must 不是命令，而是依邏輯推斷。以下整理情態助動詞的用法：

Must	強烈的要求	You must stop when the traffic lights turn red.
	邏輯推斷	He must be very tired. He's been working all day long.
Must not	禁止	You must not smoke in the hospital.
Need	需要 (較強烈)	you need to let it go.
need not	不需要	I need not buy tomatoes. There are plenty of tomatoes in the fridge.
Should	建議 (較強烈)	You should (ought to) take an umbrella in case it rains.
Ought to	建議 (較 should弱)
Can	能力	I can swim.
	許可(較直接)	Can I use your phone please?
	可能(較高機率)	Smoking can cause cancer.
Could	能力 (過去式)	When I was younger I could run fast.
	許可(較委婉)	Excuse me, could I just say something?
	可能(較低機率)	It could rain tomorrow!
May	許可(較委婉)	May I use your phone please?
	可能(較低機率)	It may rain tomorrow!
Might	許可(更委婉)	Might I suggest an idea?
	可能(更低機率)	I might go on holiday to Australia next year.

我們今天來學一些飛航的英文吧! 多數人知道起飛英文是 takeoff，降落英文是 landing，那滑行呢? 答案是 taxiing。除了跑道 runway 之外，介於跑道和停機坪中間的滑行道叫做 taxiway。另外，有時著地時，因為側風或是其他因素造成飛機重著地，英文是 hard landing 硬著地，同時這個字詞也常常出現在經濟報章雜誌上，hard landing 意指在無預期的通膨和失業率之下，經濟走下坡。飛機降落重飛叫做 go around 或是 missed approach。亂流則是turbulent。

另外，台灣人最常搞不清楚的就是 custom 跟 immigration，台灣人習慣通通叫做「過海關」。其實 custom 是海關，是管貨物進出口的，immigration 是移民關，是管人們入境出境的，這兩個是不同的單位，別再把 immigration 叫成海關了 ╮(╯_╰)╭  另一個常被搞錯的是 e-ticket, itinerary, boarding pass，現在幾乎所有的訂位記錄都電子化了，e-ticket 電子機票其實就只是 16 位數字的代碼 (各家航空公司會有些不同)，itinerary 行程，是指航空公司或旅行社寄給你的起飛時間的細詳資料，boarding pass 登機證，是拿來過移民關跟登機用的 (小編再次強調，不是海關，海關是給貨物走的!!)。另外常見的 6 位數字的代碼是訂位記錄 reference location 或 reference number。

最重要，大家一定要學的是 brace, brace, brace, head down, stay down，如果真的不幸遇到狀況，聽到空姐喊 brace ，請抱胸，低頭，低下身體。

看電影學英文 Accountant 會計師 | 金融犯罪、作假帳、逃漏稅的英文怎麼講?

最近有好幾部好評的電影，大家追片了沒有?! Accountant 這部小編納入口袋名單，不管已經看過這部或是還沒時間看，我們一起來從這部片中學相關的用語吧!!

劇中男主角，Christian Wolff，他是一名擁有超高心算能力的自閉症患者， 他表面上是在小鎮的會計師事務所工作，但他實際上是為一些全世界最危險的犯罪組織工作的自由會計師 。心算的英文是 mental calculation，心算能力很強的人，我們可以形容他是  a mental calculator。自閉症的英文是 austrism。

接下來，我們來學一些有關 financial crime 金融犯罪的說法。擄人勒贖的英文是 ransom 跟 kidnapping  的差異在於 kidnapping 不一定牽扯到贖金，有些是誘騙的綁架，限制受害者的行動，而 ransom 可以當名詞贖金，或是動詞擄人勒使用。其他金融犯罪還有 bribery 或 corruption 賂賄， tax evasion  逃漏稅，internal embezzlement 盜用內部資金。

另外，預告片中也有許片語值得劃線起來。stop picking on you 別再自我百般挑剔，lead a normal life 過著正常人的生活，英文裡我們習慣用 lead a life 而不是 live a life，因為生活是由我們去主導做決定，而不是只是單純的活著。uncooking years of books，查假帳。books 這裡並不是書本，而是指會計帳，cook the books 是指做假帳或者可以說"manipulate accounts"，所以 uncook the books 也就是查假帳。
